CREATIVE CHATS: EMILY DAY

"THERE'S A FREEDOM IN THE ACT OF BEING CREATIVE, AND CREATING FROM THE HEART"

Tell us a bit about yourself, and what inspires you? I am an artist based in Brisbane. I paint mainly some florals, still life, and some landscape. I really paint anything that makes me feel completely grounded and mindful. I'm really drawn to sculptural florals, tangled foliage, Australian native flowers, warm earthy colours, interesting landscapes, and using my past life in architecture to stitch together beautiful compositions.

Lately, that has also included some interior work. So I sort of paint a whole spectrum of anything that makes me feel happy.

What do you love the most about being an artist?
There's so many things I love about the lifestyle of being an artist and working for myself. I get to structure my day around how I want to work. I also love connecting with collectors, and I'm just so nosy. I think I just love knowing where my paintings end up. I love knowing why people connect to a painting and why.

I also work with some really beautiful galleries as well, and I just find that the balance is really there, and I'm really, really grateful.

Insta chats with Emily

We had the pleasure of chatting with Emily about all things creativity recently over on our insta. To check out the full video head here.

Controversial art opinion? I think that sometimes as both artists and collectors, we fall into the trap of looking towards trends too much and what everyone else is doing. And I think when we do that, we run the risk of everyone painting or collecting really similar looking pieces and maybe pieces that you can't see yourself holding on to for a really long time.

What does creativity mean to you? I think there's a freedom in the act of being creative. So for me, it's about creating paintings that come straight from my heart. I'm not getting validation from someone else or thinking this is what the art market wants. It's just painting what I feel like in the moment.

Favourite time of the day to paint? The afternoon into the evening as the sun is setting. I find it really hard to get into the studio in the morning and get started straight away, and I just find it really energizing as I get towards the end of the day and the colours of the sky are changing and the sun is setting.
