CREATIVE CHATS: KATE QUINN

"CREATIVITY IS LIKE FOOD FOR THE SOUL. IT'S A PART OF MY DAILY LIFE."

Tell us a bit about your art practice!
I paint using oils on canvas and mostly still life involving florals. Lately I've also been exploring some landscapes, and once a month I also paint a pet portrait. I sort of paint a whole spectrum of anything that makes me feel happy.

What do you love most about being an artist?
The complete freedom to work on my own terms, not have to answer to anyone, not have to get dressed up to go to work and just have complete flexibility of being my own boss. It comes with challenges too but mostly I find it just fantastic.

What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is just an essential part of what I do every day and I love getting all the creative juices flowing and getting into the zone and creating art. I just love it. It's like food for the soul.

Insta chats with Kate

We had the pleasure of chatting with Kate about all things creativity recently over on our insta. To check out the full video head here.

Favourite time of day?
My favourite time of the day is definitely the morning. I'm a cactus at night but in the morning I like to get up, exercise, and get the kids off to school and then come into the studio and get to work. I'm definitely the most productive in the mornings.

Controversial opinion about art:

I guess a somewhat controversial opinion about art would be that I don't think all art needs to have a deep meaning. I like painting stuff that's just beautiful for no other reason. It doesn't have any deep connection to anything and I know a lot of artists feel like their work needs to have very deep personal meanings and themes, but for me I just like stuff that looks good and that might be a bit controversial but I'm okay with that.

What scares you about art?
What scares me about art probably is just all the stuff I don't know yet. There's so much to learn. Recently I went to Paris to the Musee d'Orsay and saw all these amazing impressionist painters. I came away feeling half inspired and half kind of deflated that they were just so good at what they did and I've got so much more to learn and that feels a bit scary I guess.

Art heroes?
My art heroes are all of the really, incredible Australian female still life painters. Like the Margarets, Margaret Olley and Margaret Preston, I love their work. And then the current day, still life experts like Laura Jones and Sam Michelle. I just love seeing women succeeding in art and painting amazing still life. I love it.
